Dandenong Workshops – JULY

Last week, CFdB crew did some workshops at Dandenong! Was an awesome experience to share Capoeira with the Year 9 & 10 students. It was such a MASSIVE improvement from last year’s workshops with the same school :)

Thanks to Dandenong H.S. Awesome Team effort from Mestre Val, Sebastiao, Ramsey (his 2 kids), Mateo & me (Cantora)

Mestre Alfredo at CFdB Academy

DO YOU RECOGNISE THIS FACE?

Pictured here, alongside his portrait in the Mural at CFdB Academy is Mestre Val’s Capoeira Master, Mestre Alfredo who lives in Bahia, Brazil. Here he is, visiting CFdB for the 20th Capoeira Filhos da Bahia International Encounter 2013 – Celebrating 20 Years in Australia.

At this event, Mestre Alfredo finally graded Mestre Val with the highest grade available in CFdB – an all white Cord, recognition of achieving the highest level of Capoeira Mastery. Mestre Alfredo is a student of Mestre Paulo dos Anjos.

Teaching Capoeira to Foreigners – Capoeira Connection Article

Capoeira Connection’s Article on ‘Teaching Capoeira to Foreigners’ included contributions from Mestre Barrão, Mestre Val Boa Morte, Mestre Suíno & Mestre Joao Grande. Below is what Mestre Val had to say :)

(via sources Ginga Capoeira, Praticando Capoeira, Interview with Poloca. http://www.nzinga.org.br)
Mestre Val Boa Morte:
“Capoeira in Australia is going very well, with Instructors, Professors, and Mestres working hard to keep it organized and interesting. Capoeira is able to compete with other sporting styles – and around here there are many, including Brazilian jiu-jitsu…The only difference is that Australians are less spontaneous, they have a little less energy, and take a bit longer to fall in love with the art. In the roda, they’re slightly less competitive and they don’t have evil intent. They have respect for themselves and for others, both inside and outside the academy. The hardest thing for them is to accompany the music, since they don’t yet speak Portuguese well.”

Capoeira Kids inspiration ‘Play our Game’ by Thalia

‘Play our game’ By Thalia Osegueda Boa Morte Santos.

I just found this artwork done by my beautiful Daughter Thalia on June 4th of 2015 and I am so amazed with her imagination and intelligence, I do keep each and every things she creates and time to time I look at them, I didn’t see that one until today when I was tiding up. Thanks Thalia, you made my day once more

JULY 15, 2008 Brazil Govt Dept of Culture recognises Capoeira as Art to preserve

On July 15th, 2008, Capoeira was officially recognized as a culturally preserved art by the Brazilian government’s Department of Culture. It is a rich and multi-dimensional art that teaches culture, language, music and encompasses a complete body workout.

On this day, the Brazilian Government acknowledged the global popularity with an official recognition of Capoeira.

Capoeira joined an impressive list of cultural items named part of Brazil’s intangible patrimony.

According to newspaper coverage of these events, the Instuto de Patrimonio Historico Artistico Nacional (IPHAN; Institute of National Historic Artistic Patrimony) is presently trying to make reparations for both official and subtle discrimination against capoeira, meaning not only discrimination during the period of prohibition, but also the period during which Capoeira was marginalised within Brazilian society at large.

The motivation for this pronouncement appears in part to have come from the overseas interest in Capoeira, which has helped it gain legitimacy within Brazil. Such developments speak to the complexities of global culture.
